Review: This is one of the first novels that I've read by Gina Lamm and I was happily surprised by how easily I was sucked into this story. I'm a sucker for historical novels, but even more so when they deal with time travel.
What I loved:
The characters. They were genuine, relatable, and fun. In fact, Ella was funny as hell and the one thing I loved most about her was her strength. Despite being in a foreign place and time, she refused to be the damsel in distress and you can't help but love her for her stubbornness. Even Patrick St. John couldn't resist her. Speaking of Patrick...who wouldn't love a handsome Earl who always keeps his word no matter the cost? There were a couple of time where I wanted to throttle Patrick because he was just as stubborn as Ella, but in the end it made for a better story.
The sex. I mention the sex because I've read so many historical novels where the author does the whole "fade to black" thing and I hate it. Thankfully, Lamm did not let me down. That said, Lamm kept it tasteful and she didn't over do it. I think showing how close they had grown throughout the story really helped curve my craving for bedroom scenes between Patrick and Ella.
The banter. Both Patrick and Ella were witty and quick on their feet when it came to their responses to each other. Their conversations had me laughing out loud. Even the thoughts that went through Ella's head were hilarious! It's probably why I found her so relatable. I kept thinking the same things.
If I could change anything, it would be the beginning and end chapters.
Let me explain...
When I first started reading this story I was really confused as to how Ella knew Mrs. Knightsbridge and how a time traveling mirror was in Mrs. Knightsbridge's possession. In the book, it was implied that they knew each other and that Ella knew about the mirror, but not much else was explained. The one other thing that bothered me was the ease of time traveling back and forth. While it gave Patrick and Ella the opportunity to have two homes, I wanted some kind of consequence for using such a magical force. Besides these two things, this book was perfect.
I will definitely be picking up the rest of Gina Lamm's series! I'm hoping that by starting at the beginning of the Geek Girls Series, some things will become a lot clearer. If you enjoy time traveling romances and historical novels with a little bit of spice, I highly recommend reading Kiss the Earl. It was fantastic and I wish there were more books like it.
